La Petite Roer, eco-friendly B&B in the High Fens (Ardennes)

Yellow Room

is located in a beautifully renovated farmhouse dating back to 1781 and offers three spacious rooms with their own shower- or bathroom. We are proud to have become Green Key (sustainable tourism) certified in December 2016!

La Petite Roer is in Sourbrodt, uniquely situated in the rugged High Fens, between the Ardennes and the German Eifel. The High Fens is a peat moor at 600-700 meters above sea-level, with its own climate and its own flora and fauna. It is one of the very few remaining areas of wilderness in north western Europe and offers you tranquility, unspoilt beauty and space.

We, Elaine Meuldijk & Rogier Pitlo, decided to run La Petite Roer as sustainable as possible. For the renovation of the house, we used eco-friendly materials. We put up solar-panels, supplying most of the electricity for La Petite Roer and for Wild Cat, the self-catering holiday cottage situated in our garden. Most of the food we serve is organic or sourced locally, we have our own free-range and organically-fed chickens and we have started growing our own organic vegetables to cover part of our and our guests' needs.

The area is ideal for walking, cycling and mountainbiking, as well as for bird watching and nature photography. The Vennbahn, running from Aachen in Germany to Trois Vierges in Luxemburg, passes at a kilometer from La Petite Roer. This award winning long distance cyle path (European cycle path of the year in 2014) runs on a former railroad track and makes for easy cycling through this beautiful part of the world.

The front of the houseSpend a couple of relaxing days with us to go walking, cycling or mountainbiking on the High Fens plateau in summer or cross-country or downhill skiing in wintertime. Enjoy our large and sunny natural garden, which borders the ‘La Petite Roer’ Nature Reserve. Watch the buzzards and red kites circling above your head and lots of smaller birds nesting and foraging all around you. You may even see the kingfisher, who comes fishing in our large pond from time to time. And at night, catch a glimpse of the stone marten who pays regular nocturnal visits to the garden, as do badgers, foxes and roe deer. Or come across wildlife when you take a stroll down the lane towards the nature reserve.Breakfast in the garden

At night, you can relax with a specialty beer or a glass of wine in the cosy woodbeamed guest lounge. There’s a woodstove to keep you warm in winter time.

In summer, take your glass outside with you and unwind by the large pond in the garden, taking in the peace and quiet. Finally, enjoy a great night’s sleep in our comfortable and characterful bedrooms.

If you prefer to stay in a self-catering accomodation, we have our charming Wild Cat Cotage available for rent: wild-cat.be .Since the summer of 2020, our Holiday Home Lämmchesgasse, has become available for rent in Monschau-Kalterherberg, just over the border from us in Germany. This self-catering former farmhouse is suitable for up to 6 guests and one or two young babies or toddlers.

Children from the age of 12 are welcome @ La Petite Roer!

We still have some availability for the last days/weekend of the Christmas holidays!

We are allowed to receive guests, but of course there are special measures that we must adhere to. These also have some impact on your stay.

Upon your arrival, you will have to show your Covid-safe pass, proving that you are vaccinated against, cured from Covid-19 or that you have a recent negative test-result.

We do our best to clean even more thorough than before and to disinfect what is necessary. Therefore we spend more time than usual before, during and after breakfast and of course on airing and cleaning the rooms and the rest of the house. That is why check-in is now only possible from 17:00.

We do serve breakfast in our shared breakfast room once again. We do so in shifts per room/party and we ventilate the room well. There is a maximum of four guests per reservation/party, so we can ensure that there will not be too many people in the dining room at the same time. We have a CO2 sensor and open additional windows when the level rises. Therefore it can be rather fresh, so you may need a jacket or fleece to be comfortable.

The cafes and restaurants ar open, so you can go there for lunch and/or dinner. Occasionally, on days when most restaurants are closed, we can prepare a simple one-course meal for you. Just contact us for the possibilities.

Finally, the well-known covid measures apply: disinfect your hands upon arrival, wear a mouth and nose mask in the correct way inside the house in the shared areas (hallway / stairs / landing / guest lounge) and keep sufficient distance from other guests and us.

Somewhat different than in normal times, but fortunately our guests enjoy our special environment so much that these small inconveniences are gladly accepted.
